The Good and Bad of Cosmetic Surgery Vacations

There is a trend in American plastic surgery patients emigrating for cosmetic surgery in foreign countries. The allure is understandable. Out of country surgery does not cost as much as it does here, and while there is recovery time, why not spend it relaxing in some exotic location, away from all the bothers at home? But there are arguments among physicians as to whether cosmetic surgery vacations are really a good idea.

The cost issue stands true. Cosmetic surgery costs less in foreign countries, mainly because foreign clinics don’t have nearly as many overheads as the ones here – the cost of land and office space, for example. The other side of the coin, however, is that foreign clinics are not always guaranteed to have the same medical standards.

There are always risks involved as with any surgery, so it is important to get to know your doctor’s credentials, education and experience. This should always matter more than the cost of the surgery, as it can tell you more about the quality and results of the procedure. Seemingly, the most popular are Caribbean, South America, and Mexico plastic surgery. Physicians say that while the distance of these places might seem ideal, if things were to go wrong, you would definitely want to be closer to home.

Tijuana cosmetic surgery seems to be a fair compromise. Just a few miles south of the border, a patient can take advantage of both cost, and proximity to home in their plastic surgery procedure. Finding a qualified and reliable Tijuana plastic surgeon is not as difficult as you may think. As with other foreign countries, you can find surgeons who have had extensive and prestigious training in America or Europe, where the quality standards are much higher. So, while you may pay anywhere between 7 and $8,000 in Beverly Hills for a facelift, a Tijuana facelift, just a 3 hours drive away, can cost between 1 and $2,000.

Just make sure you do all your research, and set aside ample time and costs for traveling, accommodations, surgery, medical expenses, and recovery time. A cosmetic surgery vacation could be the best thing ever, if planned correctly. There are even wellness spas available, that are outpatient centers linked to local hotels. Recovery in an exotic, relaxing, and spa-like environment can even boost a patient’s ability to heal, experts say – especially when all the bothers of home and work and friends, are miles away.

Traveling Abroad for Cosmetic Surgery

Many Americans have been doing it for years; “emigrating” for quality plastic surgery at more affordable prices. While the U.S. standards and credentialing processes for doctors, hospitals, clinics, and outpatient surgery centers are unrivaled, the high cost of certain cosmetic procedures has driven American patients to seek foreign plastic surgery. There is no doubt that there are very qualified surgeons and high-quality surgery centers in other countries. At the same time it is a fact plastic surgery costs less in countries like Mexico, Costa Rica, India, Brazil, Thailand or Russia. Here in Los Angeles, the closest neighboring country is Mexico, so no wonder American patients often seek Tijuana plastic surgery, just a short drive from Los Angeles and San Diego.

Plastic surgery in Mexico can be quite beneficial if the planning is done right. Dr. Robert Kotler, a cosmetic surgeon in Beverly Hills, shared his thoughts on foreign plastic surgery, and what to keep in mind when choosing a surgeon and facilities. Factors like the doctor’s credentials: is the surgeon board-certified? A member of any prestigious medical associations? Have they had any medical training in the United States? What kind of surgery facility do they operate? Does it hold any safety accreditations? Will there be a board-certified anesthesiologist in attendance at all times during the procedure? What kind of safety measures will be handled before your departure home?

Tijuana plastic surgeon, Dr. Hector Milla is an example of what to look for in plastic surgery abroad. Dr. Milla is board certified in plastic surgery, an active member of the Mexican Association of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, the Mexican board of plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, the Mexican Federation of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, the Baja California Association of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, and the San Diego plastic surgery society. The facilities at Face & Body Design, Dr. Milla’s plastic surgery center in Mexico, are up to date with all the latest state of the art technology and equipment and trained staff members. Dr. Milla offers the full range of cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures, from the highly sought-after Fraxel Laser Treatment, to laser hair removal, to Tijuana tummy tuck surgery, liposuction, breast augmentation, facelift, eyelid surgery, and other popular plastic surgery procedures.

Breakthrough Technology Fights Melasma With Faster, More Complete Results

Melasma is a skin condition in which patches of brown or tan discoloration appear on the forehead, cheeks, lips, nose or forearms as a result of the body’s sudden overproduction of pigment. Sometimes called the "mask of pregnancy," melasma can afflict anyone, but is most often triggered in women—especially during the hormonal fluctuations associated with pregnancy, oral contraceptive use or hormone replacement therapy.

A breakthrough finally came when the FDA cleared Fraxel® Laser Treatment for melasma after studies showed that the new laser could be highly effective even in cases where traditional therapies had failed.

The San Diego Fraxel® Laser Treatment (FLT), is being hailed as the preferred solution for women who suffer from this non-dangerous, but often embarrassing skin condition. In the past, this stubborn skin condition has not responded well to available topical therapies. And, traditional laser and pulsed light techniques are fraught with lackluster results, significant downtime or the risk of adverse complications. But now, doctors are finding the revolutionary San Diego Fraxel Laser Treatment a more compelling treatment option that provides quicker, more complete results.

As Dr. Hector Milla, San Diego plastic surgeon explains, think of your skin as a wall of patterned tile with the Fraxel® laser using millions of tiny microscopic laser spots to “fractionally” remove every other brown tile and repair your skin’s appearance. With minimal downtime or complications, patients experience significant clearing of melasma after only four or so treatments. No wonder San Diego cosmetic surgery physicians like Dr. Milla are using FLT to give melasma the boot!

New Laser Treatment Eliminates Acne Scars

Acne is the most common skin disorder that affects over 80% of adults, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. In fact, 20 million Americans have acne badly enough that it causes scars.

Adults who suffer from acne scars are often embarrassed at the unsightly appearance that their acne leaves behind. A new medical technology called the "Fraxel Laser Treatment" works wonders for these and other skin problems. Healing occurs quickly and there is very little downtime for patients.

Dr. Hector Milla, Tijuana plastic surgeon at Face & Body Design, is one of the first in area to have this new technology. Dr. Milla performs the Fraxel Laser Treatment on patients not just locally, but also from the U.S. and elsewhere. San Diego Fraxel is not just good for acne scars, but also helps reduce the look of damaged and aged skin.

This new device promotes stimulation of collagen. Thus, individuals will continue to see improvement, even weeks after their treatment.

Safe and effective, the Fraxel laser is cleared by the FDA and has undergone extensive testing in the lab and out in the field. Dr. Milla says that based on his clinical experience, an effective treatment regime generally requires 3 to 5 treatment sessions spaced about 2 to 4 weeks apart.

“In our practice, we have observed nice improvements in uneven skin color and wrinkles around the eye area. The treated skin is smooth, soft and fresh. In fact, our patients are so thrilled with how young and attractive they look that their friends and family members are requesting Fraxel treatment, especially when compared to other abrasive treatments that are associated with far more significant side effects,” notes Dr. Milla.

Dr. Milla is a board certified plastic surgeon, active member Mexican Association of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, on the Mexican board of plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, the Mexican Federation of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, the Baja California Association of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, and member of the San Diego plastic surgery society.

ASPS Says Facelifts Not Going Anywhere

With new laser treatments like the popular San Diego Fraxel laser treatment, and injectable wrinkle fillers like Botox and Restylane, many baby boomers are choosing to postpone the facelift – but it is not dead! Many patients over the age of 45 find that they only achieve their desired results with surgical rejuvenation options, like a San Diego facelift. A study in May’s Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), reveals a new facelift technique that offers patients more options.

For those younger than 45, injectable fillers, which gained tremendous popularity over the past year, are very successful in smoothing out small lines and wrinkles. Similar results using cosmetic procedures like these, can be achieved without undergoing surgery. However, as we get older and gravity takes over, wrinkles in our eyes, brows, and jowls can become too deep for injectable fillers to smooth out. At that point, surgical procedures become the next step in order to achieve the desired results.

Although surgery may provide better results, injectables still play an important role in facial rejuvenation for the over 45 set. And yet facelifts are the second most popular cosmetic surgical procedure for men and women over age 55, according to new ASPS statistics. Nearly 102,000 people aged 40 and older had a facelift in 2006. Tijuana plastic surgeon Dr. Hector Milla, is a board-certified member of the Association in Mexico, known as the Mexican Association of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Milla, who is also an active member of the San Diego Plastic Surgery Society, is known for his Fraxel laser treatments. Many patients from Mexico and Southern California feel that the Fraxel Laser Treatment achieves similar results without the use of surgery. However Dr. Milla also notices that the best results for facial rejuvenation in men and women over a certain age, are achieved with surgical procedures such as facelifts. "Fractional" Skin-Treatment Laser: A New Favorite Anti-Aging Treatment

With all the latest technological advances in Aesthetic and Cosmetic procedures, paired with the trend of older celebrities looking younger and younger, the new standard of looking your age has drastically changed over the past few years. Over the last decade, with Botox procedures gaining popularity, women in their 40s and 50s started eliminating wrinkles. Now with the Fraxel laser treatment, women in their 60s are making 30-year-olds start to worry. Aging women can't just get away with just dying their hair anymore. 80 is the new 50, and 50 is the new 30, and there is no in between. With a procedure like San Diego Fraxel treatment, the entire face is rejuvenated. Not just wrinkles, but also blemishes, acne scars, discolorations, and other dermatological imperfections, are blasted away by an extremely precise CO2 laser, which stimulates the growth of newer fresh-looking skin cells.

The procedure is especially popular because it achieves similar results to a facelift, with a much less invasive approach and very limited downtime. Because the procedure is fairly new, it is not offered yet, at your usual plastic surgeon's office. Dr. Milla of Face & Body Design Tijuana plastic surgery, is one of few cosmetic surgeons who offers the Fraxel Repair System. Dr. Milla is a member of the San Diego Plastic Surgery Society and also offers a wide variety of other facial rejuvenation procedures. Microdermabrasion, chemical peel, Botox, and laser hair removal are just some of the non-surgical procedures offered at Face & Body. Surgical procedures include breast augmentation, liposuction, tummy tuck, eyelid surgery, nose surgery, and facelift Tijuana. Visit www.tjplast.com for more information on Fraxel and other facial rejuvenation procedures in the San Diego, Tijuana and Baja California area.
